Blackout Shades Vs. Room Darkening Shades

Decorative Accents, Shades

When creating a darkened room environment with shades there are two popular phrases, Blackout shades and Room Darkening shades. These phrases can be used interchangeably, yet can be confusing as well. Blackout and Room Darkening have different meanings when it comes to how much light enters the room. Let’s take a look and the differnces between the two.

Room Darkening Shades

First off, room darkening shades tend to encompass any window shade that reduces the amount of light without creating total darkness. Room darkening shades have less layers of fabric and block up to 95% of light. Which makes the room just noticeably darker. These shades tend to work better in a room that doesn’t get direct sunlight. Common types include: roller shades, sheer shades and pleated shades.

Blackout Shades

Blackout shades have multiple layers which block up to 100% of light, creating almost total darkness. Notice almost, even though blackout shades fit tight to the window casing, there will still be some light gaps. These light gaps create almost a halo affect around the window. Yet, there are ways to help reduce the amount of light coming through the sides. Adding draperies and side channels are a few of the most popular ways to help block light. Blackout shades are great for: bedrooms, kids rooms (who wants the bright Colorado sun waking kids up early?!) and theater rooms. Common types include: cellular shades, roman shades and woven shades. Blackout shades can also have an option to purchase a liner, which then turns your shade into a multi-functional treatment.
